  • Static Head: The total vertical distance the water is lifted.
  • Friction Head: The pressure loss caused by the water rubbing against the pipe walls and fittings (elbows, valves).
  • Pressure Head: The residual pressure required at the end of the line (e.g., if you need 40 PSI at a sprinkler head).

Understanding Pump Efficiency

No pump is 100% efficient. Energy is lost due to internal friction, turbulence, and fluid recirculation. Most centrifugal pumps operate between 50% and 85% efficiency. This efficiency rating is found on the pump's performance curve provided by the manufacturer. If you are unsure, using a conservative estimate of 65% to 70% is standard for new equipment.
