Calculating Koi Pond Volume and Liner Sizing
Building a garden pond is a rewarding project that adds beauty and tranquility to any landscape. However, the two most critical numbers you need before buying a single rock are the total water volume and the liner dimensions. Without accurate volume data, you cannot correctly size your filtration system or dose your water treatments. Without the right liner size, you risk a catastrophic leak or an expensive return trip to the store.
Why Volume Matters for Pond Health
The health of your fish and plants depends on oxygen levels and waste dilution. Both of these are dictated by the volume of water in the system. A filter rated for a 1,000-gallon pond will quickly fail in a 2,000-gallon system, leading to toxic ammonia spikes and green water. Furthermore, most pond medications and algae treatments are dosed per gallon; under-dosing is ineffective, while over-dosing can be fatal to your livestock.
The "Liner Math" Formula
One of the most common mistakes DIY pond builders make is underestimating the amount of liner needed. You cannot just buy a liner the same size as your hole! The liner must travel down the walls, across the floor, and back up the other side. Our calculator uses the standard professional formula:

Tips for an Accurate Measurement
- Measure the Max Depth: If your pond has multiple shelves, always use the deepest point for your liner calculation.
- Account for Slopes: If your pond walls are steeply sloped rather than vertical, the actual volume will be slightly less than a perfect rectangle. Our calculator assumes standard vertical or slightly sloped walls for a conservative safety margin.
- Underlayment is Vital: Always pair your EPDM or PVC liner with a non-woven geotextile underlayment. This protects the liner from sharp rocks and roots that can puncture it over time.
