Thermodynamics in Aquariums: Choosing the Right Heater

Maintaining a consistent water temperature is arguably the most important factor in keeping tropical fish and corals healthy. In the wild, large bodies of water change temperature very slowly. In a glass box in your living room, the temperature can fluctuate wildly depending on your home's HVAC system. An aquarium heater is your defense against these fluctuations, but choosing one that is too weak or too powerful can lead to disaster.

The Rule of Thumb for Wattage

The standard recommendation for most aquariums is between 3 and 5 watts per gallon of actual water volume. However, this rule depends entirely on the difference between your target water temperature and the lowest possible temperature of the room the tank is in (the "Delta T").

How Temperature Rise Affects Sizing

  • 5°F Rise: If your room is 73°F and you want a 78°F tank, you only need about 2.5 watts per gallon.
  • 10°F Rise: This is the most common scenario. 5 watts per gallon is the industry standard for this delta.
  • 15°F+ Rise: If your tank is in a cold basement, you may need 8 to 10 watts per gallon or, ideally, two separate heaters for redundancy.

Why Two Heaters are Better Than One

Heaters are mechanical devices that eventually fail. They usually fail in one of two ways: they either stop heating entirely (leaving your fish cold) or the thermostat "sticks" in the ON position (boiling your fish). By using two smaller heaters that equal the total required wattage, you protect your tank. If one fails OFF, the other keeps the temp from dropping too fast. If one fails ON, its lower wattage makes it less likely to overheat the tank before you notice.

Placement for Maximum Efficiency

To ensure even heating, place your heater near high water flow, such as the filter intake or outlet. This prevents "hot spots" around the heater and "cold spots" at the other end of the tank. For long tanks, placing a heater at each end is the most effective way to maintain a uniform environment.
